Q & A archive—Sexual
Ability
Question: One of the most frequently asked questions
by men above the age of fifty or fifty-five is: “My sexual
ability is not as good as I’d like for the past year or so. Is
there anything I can do to improve it besides taking Viagra?”
Answer: Yes there is. By the time most men have
reached this critical age they have developed many lifestyle and
nutritional habits that can cause not only problems with
satisfactory sexual function, but also a decrease in normal
energy, vitality and enthusiasm for life. I always spend some
time informing them of some of the habits which could be
contributing to their complaint such as: 1. smoking 2. drinking
too much alcohol 3. many different kinds of medication can cause
impotence e.g. most blood pressure and antidepressant
medications (More natural ways can be found to control these
problems.) 4. eating excessive amounts of sugar, refined flour
foods and hydrogenated fat foods 5. getting too little
exercise
Once the above problems have been satisfied, eating properly
is of primary importance. The diet should contain adequate
amounts of eggs, mixed nuts, fresh meats, real butter (not
margarine), fresh vegetables and fruits and lesser amounts of
the grain foods. You will notice that many of the good foods
mentioned here contain cholesterol. Don’t be afraid of the
natural cholesterol foods. Much of the fear mongering about fats
and cholesterol the past many years is propaganda fed to the
public from the food, drug and medical industries for financial
gain. Cholesterol is not the demon food that it has been make
out to be (see Chapter 9 of my book “Letters to my Patients”).
Adequate amounts are necessary for the proper functioning of our
bodies. Cholesterol is essential for the manufacture of hormones
by the body and as such is very necessary for sex function.
After paying ample attention to the above basics, there are
several natural supplements that can help. L-Arginine taken on
an empty stomach—2500 mg. a day. (This is also good for lowering
blood pressure because it is a blood vessel relaxant.) Maca
Extract 300 mg. three times a day with meals. Let’s not forget
about “The 5-Cent Miracle Tablet”—Magnesium (see chapter 7 in my
book). Vitamin E Complex 800 units per day. Be sure you get the
complex. The cheap synthetic Vitamin E is of very little value.
Vitamin E not an aphrodisiac as is thought by many people, but
it is important for normal reproductive system health. Ginkgo
Biloba 240 mg. per day taken with meals. Ginkgo helps increase
circulation. These latter two should probably not be taken if
you are taking “blood thinner” medications.
Improvement should not be expected until the above have been
taken for several weeks. Good luck!
