Question: I have terrible cramping and fluid retention
and all the other PMS symptoms. My family wants to leave home
for several days each month. I have tried all the diuretics and
hormones and antidepressants etc. but nothing works and the
doctors have nothing else to offer. What else can I do?
Answer:
In my book “Letters to My Patients” chapter
19, I address this problem in detail. I would suggest you study
that chapter.
A quick but useful synopsis would be the following:
Quit eating the foods that cause fluid retention because it is
fluid retention that is the basic cause of PMS in the first
place. The prescription diuretics do not solve the problem
because they cause the body to eliminate the very valuable
vitamins and minerals that are needed to stop the problem.
1. Refined sugar and flour products must be eliminated
because they are a principle cause of fluid retention by the
body.
2. Adequate amounts of B6 (pyridoxine HCl) must be
maintained. I usually use 100 mg. two or three times a day until
symptoms improve then regular intake of only 100 mg. a day is
sufficient.
3. An adequate base of all the B vitamins is important, so I
suggest a 50 mg. B complex capsule once or twice a day.
4. Magnesium is extremely important for the relaxation of the
muscles of the uterus. It is also very important for calming the
nervous system. I suggest 500 to 1000 mg. a day. Too much
magnesium will cause diarrhea, so if this happens reduce the
dose a little.
5. Vitamin E complex is a very important antioxidant which is
very necessary for all female functions and for proper muscle
relaxation. I suggest about 800 units per day.
Strictly following the above for a few months generally keeps
the family at home during period times.
