Q & A archiveMononucleosis

Question: What do you suggest for Mono?

Answer: The answer is much longer and more complicated than the question. Mononucleosis is caused by the Epstein Barr Virus. Since it is a virus, antibiotics and pharmaceuticals do it no good whatsoever and in fact using antibiotics on this condition is merely lending the possibility of adding fuel to the fire since the antibiotics given over a period of time may frequently sterilize the bowel of all bacteria, including the very necessary and friendly acidophilus and thereby make the patient susceptible to candida infections and immune system depression.

Epstein Barr Virus is also responsible for the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Epstein Barr, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia are frequently found at the same time in the same patient.

The nutritional treatment is to do everything possible to strengthen the immune system. That means eliminating sugar foods, white flour foods, hydrogenated fat foods, get plenty of rest and keep your elimination adequate and daily.

Several nutritional factors are very important. The antioxidants (Vitamins C, E, A and zinc) and plenty of the omega 3 fatty acids. Vitamin C, 1000 mg. taken every hour or two during the day, Vitamin E complex 800 to 1200 units a day, Vitamin A 25,000 units a day (the E and the A should be taken with a meal that contains fat because they are fat soluble vitamins), zinc 50 to 100 mg. a day and Flaxseed Oil (fresh, cold pressed) 2 tablespoons daily. You should consult your doctor to make sure that none of these nutrients will interfere with any prescription medications you are taking.

In severe cases, I frequently resort to I.V. vitamin therapy. With good care the signs and symptoms of Mono are generally gone in a couple weeks or less.
