Q & A archive—Hair
Loss
Question: Hi. I listen to your show but must have
missed the hair loss discussion. I am 76-year-old lady and have
always had thick hair. It is beginning to thin and I notice hair
on my clothes much more each day. Is there vitamin antidote for
this? Thanks.
Answer: A certain amount of hair thinning is normal for
women as years go by but from your description it sounds like you
are having some excessive hair loss. One of the first things I
think of when I see excessive hair loss, particularly in women, is
thyroid deficiency. As we age our endocrine glands (of which the
thyroid gland is one), slow down in function and many times that
has a definite effect on hair loss. Decreased thyroid function
becomes increasingly suspicious if you also have several of the
other signs of needing thyroid. Please refer to the Q&A about
Natural
Thyroid and you will find an almost complete answer
to your question.
The thyroid is very important and should definitely be checked
by a good physician who is nutritionally oriented. Nutrients that
are very important include: High quality protein as found in
liver, eggs and Brewer's Yeast. All of the B vitamins are very
important, especially B5 (pantothenic acid), PABA, and Inositol.
Of course, it goes without saying that you must stop the sugar
foods, "enriched" flour foods and soft drinks. Minerals are also
very important, especially Magnesium.
Good luck and if we can help you further, just let us know.
