Q & A archiveDepression

Question: My doctor prescribed a combination of Prozac and Wellbutrin for depression and they have helped. However, I would like to switch to something natural. How do I stop the prescription antidepressants? Will an abrupt switch do harm? I also have the same dilemma with Celebrex for arthritis. How do I switch to a natural arthritis treatment?

Answer: Depression has many causes and many entire books have been written on the subject. It would be impossible to address them all here. However, I have found in more than fifty years of treating people that a person’s poor diet causes a lot of depression. Eating sugar foods –candy, soda pop (diet or regular), cake, pie, cookies, ice cream etc—are devastating to normal brain function. In my book “Letters to my Patients” I have many references to depression and one entire chapter on Hypoglycemia and consequent depression which you should read.

It would be unwise to try to stop your antidepressants suddenly. However, I have had great success getting people off them gradually while on a prescribed diet with proper vitamin and mineral supplementation.

Getting off the arthritis medication is a very similar problem. You must first get off all “junk foods,” get on a very nutritious eating program with adequate vitamin and mineral supplementation and then you will gradually have less need for the Celebrex. I have an excellent chapter in my book which addresses the arthritis problem and ways to help it. Soft drinks are very harmful to our bones and they must be stopped. A tablespoon of good quality Cod Liver Oil at bedtime is helpful. Glucosamine and Chondroitan and MSM are helpful. Many other suggestions in my book.

If you are having these problems, there are many other degenerative conditions which you may be inviting due to your living habits.
