Q & A archive—Chronic
Constipation
Question: I have been having problems with chronic
constipation for years now. I have tried a lot of different
remedies, going to doctors etc. I exercise regularly and eat
healthy, drink water but that still does not help me in going to
the bathroom. I usually go every two weeks, if even that. Lately
I have been gaining weight, I am not sure why. I am very
depressed. Can you suggest something, maybe a good colon
cleansing program out there? PLEASE HELP. I am desperate!
Answer: This is a rather complicated problem for which
to offer a proper answer. I have seen several such cases over my
practice career. One such case I can remember had what is called
a megacolon (a colon larger and longer than usual). This
required several weeks of strict diet made up mostly of raw
vegetables and raw fruits with extra stewed prune (6 or 8
daily), a glass of prune juice daily, and also absolute
avoidance of sugar and white flour foods and all cereals except
brown rice. In some of these cases large doses of magnesium is
necessary. In the case I am speaking of I started with three 400
mg. magnesium capsules at bedtime for several days and if no
results were obtained gave a capsule or two in the mornings.
When the bowels start to move the dose can be adjusted according
to need. The bowels should eventually be regulated to move at
least once very good every day. I cannot overemphasize the
necessity for a good, natural food diet with the elimination of
all refined foods and soft drinks.
Since you are gaining weight, I might suspect that you may
need some thyroid. People who are hypothyroid have lots of
trouble with constipation. You may need some personal help with
this problem. I would suggest that you read my book first and if
you still have a problem, I would be glad to help you in the
office.
