Q & A archiveCold Sores

Question: My husband has cold sores extremely frequently. The pharmacist recommended taking L-Lysine, which he has been taking for a prolonged period of time, but still he battles with the cold sores. Can you recommend something better?

Answer: Cold sores are caused by several things, among them is an imbalance in the Lysine/Arginine ratio in the body tissues. I will try to give you a 1,2,3 answer to your question.

1.Stop eating all sweets as nearly as possible. No chocolate candy in particular but all sugar foods in general and that certainly includes soft drinks (diet or regular it makes no difference).

2.Normalize the bowel flora with acidophilus. Good acidophilus can be obtained at any Health Good Store.

3.Take 1000 mg of Lysine three times a day on an EMPTY STOMACH (that means one hour before a meal or two hours after a meal). A total of 3000 mg. daily for about a week or until the cold sores are healing well and then lower the dose to 500 mg. three times a day and after the sores are all gone you may need to continue to take about 500 mg. a day until the cold sores no longer have a tendency to recur. Lysine can be obtained in 500 mg. capsules at any Health Food Store.

4. It is a good idea to take 1000 mg. capsules of Vitamin C after each meal also as a way to build up the immune system to help heal the sores as well as prevent them in the future. The Vitamin C is excellent for helping to prevent colds and illness anyway, so continue to take it for the rest of your life. Also continue to delete sugar foods from your diet.

I don’t think I have ever seen the above method fail to cure fever blister problems.
