Q & A archive—Primary Biliary
Cirrhosis
Question: I have been diagnosed with Primary Biliary
Cirrhosis. What should I eat, drink or take as nutritional
supplements to prevent a liver transplant?
Answer: It should be imperative that you do everything
possible to restore the liver to good health. Generally a long
time before this condition becomes a problem, the body has been
nutritionally abused badly. Diet has probably included lots of
sugar foods, soft drinks, refined flour and hydrogenated or
partially hydrogenated fats. Possibly also too much alcohol
consumption. Constipation frequently is an accompanying problem
The bile becomes too viscous and cannot pass from the liver
freely.
Ideally, all of the above must be stopped completely or at
least greatly reduced, depending on how badly you want to get
well. Then the diet should include lots of fresh fruits and
vegetables, eggs from free roaming chickens, moderate amounts of
meat, a handful or two of mixed nuts, real butter (not margarine),
and avocados. Stop dairy products. Drinks several glasses of pure
water daily.
Supplements should include: A good Pancreatic enzyme that has
some ox bile in it, to be taken with each meal. Two heaping
tablespoons of Brewers Yeast Powder, 500 mg. of Choline after each
meal, a good quality Vitamin and Mineral product with at least 50
mg. of all of the vitamin B factors in it taken once daily,
Vitamin C 1000 mg., twice daily, Vitamin E complex 800 units daily
and magnesium capsules 500 to 1000 mg. a day.
Your strict observance and patience is generally rewarded with
gradual improvement in the way you feel and the health of your
liver.
