Q & A archiveCarpal Tunnel

Question: I have carpal tunnel syndrome, and so far, there is no nerve damage. What can I do to keep from having surgery?

Answer: Carpal Tunnel is usually caused by overuse from repetitive movements of the hand and wrist which causes swelling of the ligament in the wrist through which the median nerve runs. The swelling can be aggravated not only by overuse but also by eating or drinking refined carbohydrate foods which can cause fluid retention in the tissues of the body, including tissues of the wrist. The answer is to reduce or stop the overuse of the wrist and stop the sweets and soft drinks and refined flour food such as enriched flour. Since vitamin B6 helps the body to reduce fluid retention and swelling, I always recommend that my patient take a good Vitamin B complex capsule which contains at least 50 mg. of all the B vitamins and then add 100 mg. of B6 three times a day after meals with at least 400 or 500 mg. of magnesium once a day since Magnesium and B6 are synergistic to one another. Generally if this routine is followed carefully for several weeks to three or four months, the carpal tunnel is usually much improved to gone.
